Reduce Lines

smile & marionette lines

Overtime, changes in facial structure, fat, and muscle activity can have an affect on where lines appear on the face. Two of the most common places for these lines to appear are the smile lines (above the lips and below the nose and the marionette lines (below the lips).

Line reduction FAQs

Marionette lines, which are grooves or furrows that run from the corners of the mouth to the jawline, can give someone a naturally angry or sad appearance, even when their face is at rest. Without the proper treatment, marionette lines continue to deepen and worsen over time.*

Smile Lines. For most of us, smile lines – also known as nasolabial folds – are nothing to smile about. These lines and creases run from the side of the nose to the corner of the mouth, and are the result of the loss of facial volume and skin elasticity as we age.*

The primary causes of smile lines include:

  • a loss of elasticity (collagen)
  • dehydrated skin
  • genetics
  • smoking
  • sun damage*

Injectable fillers

Injectable fillers are among the top choices for people looking to get rid of smile lines without undergoing surgery. Many are made from hyaluronic acid and are injected at the crease that goes from your mouth to your nose. The effects are noticeable right away, but you can also have them reversed if you don’t like the results. Some common brand names include Juvéderm and Restylane. The results typically last several months. However, it’s thought that after repeated injections, some scar tissue may be left behind that causes a more permanent filler effect. Other fillers such as Radiesse, which is made of calcium hydroxyapatite, and Sculptra, which is made of poly-L-lactic acid, may offer more permanent results and can be injected deeper in the facial tissues.

These injectable fillers can last from about 6 to 18 months at a time. Side effects can occur right after the initial injection and include headaches and allergic-like reactions. *

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Asymmetry

These side effects are usually temporary and often resolve on their own within 2-3 weeks.
